About

Drawing on her experience as a volunteer interpreter, Valeria Luiselli examines the experiences of undocumented Latin American children arriving in the United States and facing possible deportation.

The essay is structured around the forty questions she translated and asked children during immigration intake interviews, using the questionnaire to reveal the complicated bureaucratic process through which their individual circumstances are evaluated. Luiselli considers the violence, instability, and other dangers that can drive children to leave their homes, as well as the hazardous journeys they undertake through Mexico toward the U.S. border. She contrasts their personal stories with the impersonal language and procedures of the immigration system, exploring how complex human experiences must be translated into answers that fit legal categories.

Blending reportage, personal reflection, and social commentary, the book examines migration, childhood, borders, citizenship, displacement, and the human consequences of immigration policy while emphasizing the individual lives behind broader debates about migration.

"Humane yet often horrifying, Tell Me How It Ends offers a compelling, intimate look at a continuing crisis—and its ongoing cost in an age of increasing urgency." —Jeremy Garber, Powell's Books

"Valeria Luiselli's extended essay on her volunteer work translating for child immigrants confronts with compassion and honesty the problem of the North American refugee crisis. It's a rare thing: a book everyone should read." —Stephen Sparks, Point Reyes Books

"Tell Me How It Ends evokes empathy as it educates. It is a vital contribution to the body of post-Trump work being published in early 2017."—Katharine Solheim, Unabridged Bookstore
