Set in the small town of Exton Cross, Little Rumours follows three very different mothers whose lives become entwined when one of their children goes missing. 

The three women are: 

  • Naomi: born and raised in Exton Cross, anxious to keep the social fabric of the town in her control; she feels she knows everyone’s business already. 
  • Aleema: moved in three years ago with her husband to care for an ailing mother-in-law; she feels like an outsider, and suspects the other locals whisper about her. 
  • Kelly: the newest arrival, with her son, carrying a dark secret (in later reveals, involving her ex-husband and witness protection). 
The story begins innocently enough: the three women wave their children off at the school gates. By day’s end, one child is missing. Ruinous rumours begin to swirl. Secrets from the past, hidden traumas, character flaws and prejudices in the town all come under pressure. The narrative is told from multiple viewpoints (each mother in turn), which helps reveal both the intimate inner lives of the characters and their unreliable perceptions. As the mystery deepens, loyalties, trust, and moral ambiguity become central: who is telling the truth, who is hiding what, and how honourable are people in their assumptions and behaviour.
