About

Every good story needs an elephant of surprise—or does it?

The hilarious little red chicken is back in Interrupting Chicken and the Elephant of Surprise, the laugh-out-loud sequel to David Ezra Stein's Caldecott Honor-winning Interrupting Chicken.

When Little Chicken comes home from school, she's excited to tell Papa about an important storytelling lesson: every good story needs an elephant of surprise! Papa gently explains that she probably means an element of surprise, but Little Chicken is absolutely certain she's right.

To settle the disagreement, they explore familiar fairy tales, including The Ugly Duckling, Rapunzel and The Little Mermaid. Papa hopes to demonstrate how unexpected twists make stories exciting, but Little Chicken has some wonderfully imaginative surprises of her own.

Filled with expressive illustrations, clever wordplay and playful interruptions, this delightful picture book celebrates creativity, family reading and the joy of storytelling.

Perfect for bedtime, classroom read-alouds and children who love silly stories with unexpected endings.
