The protagonist is Effy Sayre, a student at Llyr’s prestigious architecture college. Since childhood, Effy has been haunted by visions of the Fairy King. She finds solace in reading a book called Angharad by Emrys Myrddin, which tells the story of a mortal girl who falls in love with the Fairy King and ends up destroying him. 

Effy’s connection to Angharad is deep; she clings to her tattered copy of it, finding in it something that keeps her anchored. She discovers a contest to redesign Emrys Myrddin’s estate (Hiraeth Manor), a chance that feels destined — her opportunity. However, when Effy arrives at the manor, she finds someone else already there: Preston Héloury, a literature scholar who is also investigating Myrddin’s legacy and determined to reveal that Emrys may have been a fraud. 

The manor itself is in ruin: musty, decrepit, on the verge of collapsing into the sea. As Effy and Preston explore the estate and sift through archives, letters, and rumors, they begin to uncover secrets about the author, about myths, and about what love, memory, and legacy truly mean. Dark forces (both magical and mortal) conspire against them; there is mystery, possibly supernatural threat, and tension between the world of myth and the world of human ambition.
