The 1993 Midwest flood began slowly. As spring arrived, the snow melted and soaked into the ground or ran into nearby rivers. Everything was fine until the rain started. In the summer of 1993, some parts of the Midwest received more than 4 feet (1 m) of rain. Soon the rivers, including the Mississippi and Missouri, began to rise and overflow onto the land. The flood killed 48 people and nine states lay in ruin. People wondered if the misery caused by the water would ever end.
