A Bookseller in Madrid

This is a historical-fiction novel set in the 1930s, blending the rise of Nazism in Germany with the political upheaval leading to the Spanish Civil War.

Born in Germany, Barbara Spiel finds solace in books from a young age. As the Nazis rise to power in the early 1930s, she flees her homeland and relocates to Madrid with a dream of opening a bookshop — a haven for idealists and independent thinkers.

She hopes the bookshop will be a place where literature, hope, and free thought can flourish. But Spain is itself on the brink of fracture: as political tensions escalate toward civil war, Barbara’s dream collides with reality.

When war erupts, and with extremist forces encroaching — including Stalinist agents, Franco-aligned fascists, and the lurking danger of foreign influence — Barbara must fight to preserve her bookstore, protect those she loves (including a Spanish political figure to whom she has grown close), and survive in a world where trust is perilous and ideals are constantly under threat.

The novel becomes a story of love, resistance, sacrifice, and the power of books — a tribute to the hope that literature can foster even in the darkest of times.
