When the eighteen-man U.S. Marine recon team was inserted on Hill 488 on June 13, 1966, they unwittingly entered into a bloody battle against a well-trained battalion of 450 North Vietnamese soldiers - with no relief or reinforcements arriving until dawn. For one terror-filled night, the U.S. troops fought for their lives in an exhausting conflict that left every man in the battalion either dead or wounded - and resulted in their becoming the most highly decorated small unit in the history of the U.S. military.
