Discontent with consumer culture drives fantasies of living an "alternative lifestyle," from the hippies to the antiglobalization movement to youth trends like Goths and Gangster Rap. Using examples from music and movies, the authors argue that alternative lifestyles actually drive consumer culture, and in fact offer the best opportunities for new products, ad campaigns, and marketing efforts.
