The Snowy Day

The magic of waking up on the first morning of a heavy winter snowfall is in the wonder of a familiar landscape transformed into a sparkling fairyland. For the little boy in Ezra Jack Keats’ extraordinary contribution to contemporary children’s picture books, it’s the delightful chance to explore his little urban world in a series of enchanting adventures. A marvelous collage of cutouts and watercolors, The Snowy Day offers a rare type of artistry for a picture book, beautifully combined with a tranquil tone children love. As he dons his red winter garments and sets off to explore his freshly altered environment, the little boy enjoys such simple explorations as making footprints, creating snow angels and carefully saving a snowball for the next day. A 1963 Caldecott Honor Book and a perennial favorite, The Snowy Day remains a magical tribute to the beauty of winter.
