About

In 1990 van Gogh’s portrait of Dr. Gachet sold for a record-breaking $82.5 million. This book recounts the painting’s journey while discussing modernist art and the forces behind the art market. You’ll read about the painting’s 13 owners and their place in history: avant-garde European collectors, dealers in Paris and Berlin, and a member of the Nazi brass who sold the painting after it was confiscated. Portrait of Dr. Gachet looks at today’s culture and appreciation of art. 406 pages.
