About

Part of the Poet to Poet series: in this series, a contemporary poet selects and introduces a poet of the past.

The book gives a selection of Jonson’s work (poems, perhaps plays or prose fragments) along with Thom Gunn’s introduction / critical commentary. The aim is to offer a “passionate and accessible introduction” to Jonson. Specific biographical hooks in the synopsis include: Jonson was born in London (1572-1637); in 1598 he killed an actor in a duel but avoided hanging via “benefit of clergy”; by 1616 he had regained court favour and had a pension from James I, effectively making him court poet / laureate.
