Sera Dubash is a well-off Parsi housewife whose opulent Bombay home is kept gleamingly clean by Bhima. She has worked for the Dubash household for more than 20 years. The widowed Sera hides years of disappointment beneath her comfortable daily life, spending her time fretting over her daughter and charming son-in-law. Bhima, hardened by despair, sacrifices all for her wild granddaughter, a university student whose education could help the family to escape the slums - slums Bhima returns to each night after polishing furniture she is not allowed to sit on. Yet the two women are connected by a shared emotion, a strange kind of friendship. But when a crisis comes their loyalties are stretched - to breaking point . . .
