Parent Effectiveness Training, pioneered by Dr. Thomas Gordon, was the first national program to stress how ineffective and destructive punishing kids is and to teach parents effective alternatives. It introduced concepts adapted by numerous other parenting and relationship books (e.g., Adele Faber's How To Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen To Kids Will Talk), such as active listening, "I" messages, no-lose conflict resolution, and conflict resolution.
