About

Now with a new introduction by Mark Bowden

In 1943 John Steinbeck filed dispatches from World War II for the New York Herald Tribune. They captured the human side of the war. He wrote from blitz-era England, North Africa and Italy, and he looked at the people more than the battles. His subjects ranged from the men of a bomber crew to Bob Hope on his USO tour. He ate and drank with soldiers behind enemy lines, talked with them and fought beside them. The pieces were first collected as a book in 1958. Together they make a lasting portrait of wartime life, and it still feels truthful and humane.
