Eleven interconnected stories weave together family, identity, memory, and the vibrant experiences of the Dominican diaspora.

In Buenos Espíritus, debut author Camille Gomera-Tavarez introduces readers to the Beléns, an extended Dominican family whose stories unfold across generations and borders. From the fictional town of Hidalpa to Santo Domingo, Paterson, San Juan, and Washington Heights, each character offers a new perspective on what it means to belong to a family shaped by migration, tradition, and change.

Blending vivid realism with touches of the magical, these interconnected stories explore identity, mental health, machismo, complicated family relationships, and the bonds that continue to connect people across time and distance. Together, they create a richly layered portrait of the Dominican diaspora and the joys, tensions, and memories passed from one generation to the next.

Translated into Spanish by Lorraine Avila, Buenos Espíritus is an intimate and compelling collection about finding your place within a family, a culture, and a history that stretches far beyond any one person or home.
