Drought and the hole in the sky have destroyed Megan and Ian's world. They are alone now except for an uncle who lives far away. Megan insists that they find him. Together they enter the dangerous world of the buffalo jump, and escape it only to encounter the survivalists with their dogs and guns. Megan has taken one souvenir from their home, the crystal drop. This is the promise of water that drives them on.
