Ways to Get Out of a Reading Slump
November 23, 2020
We all know there is no better feeling than plowing through your To-Be-Read (TBR) list! But no matter how big of a bookworm you are, we have all experienced reading slumps at some point in time. A reading slump is essentially a lack of motivation to read; it’s that sensation when you want to pick up a book, but the thought of reading it also feels like a chore, so you don’t.
Fear not! Reading slumps are more common than you think, and thankfully we’ve put together a list of tips and tricks that will help pull you out from the depths of your reading rut!
Re-read an Old Favorite
Sometimes re-reading an old favorite can give us a sense of comfort and joy. Since we are already familiar with the story, it’s usually an easy read, and we know we like the book. That said, if you’re not a huge fan of re-reading (like some), then try picking a book by an author you know you like!
Switch Up the Genre
Alternatively, if you’ve been reading a lot of one particular genre, there is probably a chance you just aren’t feeling it anymore (or at least right now). A change of genre could be what you need to spark your literary interest again. If you’ve been reading a lot of Fiction, maybe it’s time to switch it up and go for a Non-Fiction book, or vice versa!
Try on a New Size
When you’re in a reading slump, starting a lengthy novel can seem like an impossibly challenging task, so why not reach for something shorter? Reading a short story or novella, no matter how easy or simple it may seem, will likely give you a sense of accomplishment and remind you how much fun reading can be.
Read a Book with Someone
Sometimes a little extra motivation from our friends is all we need to get reading again! Joining a book club or even just reading the same book as your BFF is a great way to keep you accountable and pull you out of a slump.
Create a Reading Nook
Creating a cozy and dedicated reading area can signal to your brain that it’s time to read! If you’ve been reading in the same spot, try finding somewhere new. Decorate it with pillows and other things that make you happy so it becomes a place where you’ll want to spend time.
Create a Reading Routine
Even though many of us can burn through a book in just a few days, it’s okay if binge-reading isn’t something you are feeling up to right now. Try creating a schedule with a small daily page goal and checking off every day once you finish; this will give you a sense of accomplishment and keep you accountable!
We hope these tips help you through your next reading slump. Remember, we all experience them, but they eventually come to an end! If you have any other suggestions on how to kick a slump, share them below!
