In October 1934, 30 brave women left their homes to join the ranks of 86,000 male soldiers-including the future Chinese leaders Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, and Zhou Enlai-on an epic escape from surrounding enemy forces. In the course of a year, the women would cover more than 4,000 brutal miles on foot, traversing deadly swamps and treacherous peaks, terrifying Tibetan plateaus and vast deserts. Their journey would be one of the most horrific in history, and only 10,000 of the men would make it to the end-but remarkably, almost every woman would live to tell the tale of the Long March.
