Alfred, a penniless emigrant from war-torn Germany, arrives in Toronto and achieves success as a mining engineer. He fathers a daughter, Carmen, but is too restless and free-wheeling to stay faithful to his wife for long, to forgo passion with other women. When the marriage unravels, he departs to explore the world, promising his young daughter that, like him, she will travel to exotic, foreign lands. Indeed, as young Carmen visits him every year, she finds each new place wondrous and seductive - a temporary distraction from the growing ambivalence between father and daughter. When Alfred settles in Argentina during the time of the Dirty War, Carmen, now a strong-minded and fiercely independent young woman, finds her loyalties strained to the maximum. Not only is her father a man of great vitality and charisma, he is also capable of outrageous indifference and political cruelty. She fights him at every turn, yet cannot escape the fact that he is the first man she has ever known and loved. She is drawn to his world, the world of men, yet as a female her entry seems inextricably and dangerously tied to sexuality. Written with humor and powerful imagination, The Continuation of Love articulates brilliantly the labyrinthine struggle of a man and a woman, a father and a daughter, to create a world of meaning and love.
