Sam Morgan, once a young Philadelphia runaway, now a seasoned fur trapper and mountain man, faces the most daunting task of his adventuresome life. It is 1827 and he, along with the trapping brigade commanded by Jedediah Smith, has been expelled from Mexican California. Only a few months earlier, Sam's beloved Crow Indian wife, Meadowlark, died in childbirth, and he had to leave his baby daughter behind - but only temporarily. He is determined to return to the California coast to find his daughter and return her to Meadowlark's village.

In Santa Fe, Sam meets a beautiful widow, Senora Luna y Salazar (known as "Dona Paloma"). She and Sam become lovers and in the interlude Dona Paloma teaches Sam the Santa Fe pastimes of fandangos and gambling, as well as the brutal realities of the Mexican slave trade.
